Re Trainspotting: once you get into <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/booksblog/2010/jan/13/death-of-the-author" rel="nofollow">Roland Barthes</a>, the fact that DFW couldn't have read Welsh before he wrote Infinite Jest becomes irrelevant. It's the reading, not the writing, that is susceptible to influence...
